Me and Shannon at the Ley grocery store after our amazingly synchronized arrival.
The real deal desert, with cactus abound.
Shannon and the van.
If you look closely, you can see me doing downward dog in the desert.
Shannon hula hooping at our campsite, Second Point.
Home sweet home, Shannon’s all wheel drive van, with penthouse and ocean view.
Camping in style, which felt like the Ritz after my hammock and mosquito net setup.
The swell starting to pick up at Third Point.
Shannon, Chloe, Jordan and me.
Jed and his daughter.
Milford (the guy) and Sol (the puppy).
Party night at the cantina.
Chloe’s 21st birthday, a great excuse for chocolate cake!
Chloe, paying birthday dues with a cake in the face.
Since there weren’t any candles, we improvised with a cigarette. Make a wish.
Jordan and Chloe, aka “Joey.”
Chloe demonstrating the cross step
Me, stoked.
Jordan, surfing a retro single fin.
Me, longboarding.
Shannon, the smile says it all.
Chloe, pure style.

The mosquitos and jelly fish were relentless. Walking back through the jungle after surfing one day, I was attacked. A friend counted more than 30 bites. They itched for days.

Me dropping in.
Flaco getting barreled.
Backside hacks – a work in progress.
Me laying into a turn.
Flaco boosting.
Me working on my backside turns.
Stuck at the roadblock. At least we remembered to bring coconuts!
The tamale vendor, selling out of a truck and an old tire.
Flaco with a mouthful of tamale.
The sign at the roadblock.
Papaya grove.
The road down to La Ticla.
There may be cars now in La Ticla, but there are still donkeys.
And that’s how you open a coconut.
The wave at La Ticla.

I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming at this spot in Mainland Mexico: it was overhead, barreling, glassy, and only two guys were out.

Sitting on this branch would have been less painful than getting skunked.
Sepia toned Salina Cruz.
Beauty, despite the flatness.
Chile relleños. Something turned out right!
The main street in Barra de la Cruz.
A new kind of chicken.
Why did the iguana cross the road?
Surf buddies from Uruguay, loaners of longboards.
The lagoon where I threw up after eating chicken taquitos.
The restaurant at Barra de la Cruz.
Me and Stephanie in the storm.
Rain dancing.
Upside down in the rain.
More 2WD adventures.
A random cove.
Truck-minded.
The search.
Almost a wave, but not really.
Here, I’m driving a two-wheel-drive rental car down sketchy roads in Mainland Mexico looking for surf. After getting lost and stuck countless times over the course of two weeks, I blew a tire and had to head back to town.
It looks better than it was.
Singing the no-wave blues.
Flat day diversions.
What getting skunked looks like.

Welcome to Zicatela.
How to get through a bus ride with diarreah.
Zicatela, barreling.
Unknown surfer, making the drop.
Unknown surfer, taking one on the head.
Picturesque Puerto.
My morning routine.
When at first Puerto beats you senseless, get your biggest board and try again.
Head high and frightening.
Another grinder.
Me and Arturo at the cafe.
Double scoops with Stephanie.
Girls night out at Bar Fly.
Riding the collectivo to the mercado (market).
Meat, mercado style.
A big bag of chiles at the mercado.
Fish, flies, and flyswatter.
Fresh juice at the mercado.
Finally got barreled at Puerto…kind of.
Stephanie´s first barrel…kind of.
Tandem barrel!

While paddling across the river to go surf, I saw a strange current trailing after me in the water. I thought it was a fish, until I saw the two predatory eyes and scaly tale. Then I hightailed it out of the water as fast as I could!

My cheesy clown car.
Driving into Salina Cruz.
One of the friendlier dirt roads.
Beautiful landscape.

A remote beach.
Going exploring.

Wide open space.
A king of a coconut.
This is where I draw the line with a 2WD.
The surfers from Guadalajara.
Taking refuge from the rain on the basketball court.
Mixed seafood ceviche.
Pass the sea snails!
And wash them down with a cold one.
Our precious patch of shade.

Walking through a roadblock in Mainland Mexico. Buses were not permitted to pass, so I had to carry all of my belongings-including three surfboards-on foot for 2.5 miles.
A Very. Long. Walk.
The people of Santa Maria holding their ground.
Truck drivers finding some shade.
